The ever elusive MBA...

In my last post I mentioned that I am working toward my next degree.  In 2011, I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Network Security & Electronics, and an Associates in Technology.  Now, I am setting my sights even higher, and working toward a Masters of Business Administration.

Because of the success of our business in the last two years, I have been able to leave the workforce, and my wife has been able to leave her job as well as we continue to work full-time in our store.  This success has given her the opportunity to be the first person in her family to go to college, and she has set quite a lofty goal: to become an occupational therapist.  An OT degree requires spending six years in a highly competitive degree program, and only those with the highest of grades succeed.  She is doing wonderfully, however, and expects to graduate with honors once all is said and done.

Recently, we discussed the possibility of me returning to school as well.  I have learned many things as I began our business, but I have made countless mistakes along the way.  To help stop some of these mistakes before they start, I looked into getting an MBA degree, and I'm glad I did.

I began in May of 2015, and expect to graduate in December of this year.  As I have progressed through my courses, we have covered many different subjects that I had to learn the hard way, from determining how to penetrate an existing market to deciding which product lines to continue to invest in.  Even the accounting work has been invaluable, as I am now able to more efficiently do accounting for the store as I go, reducing the amount of time spent dealing with tax filing.

So what will I do in December, once I graduate?  Will I shut down or sell the store and being working for someone else?  Will I use the tools I have learned to grow the store even further? Only time will tell.  However, I'll be sure to keep a note of it here as I progress in my career.
